From Nervous to Networking Master: 6 Key Tips for Networking Events

Mirror, mirror on the wall, who’s ready to network with them all? Me! 🤗 I went to a networking event yesterday and it was my jam, but I know not everyone loves walking into a room full of strangers. Whether you’re doing it because you have to or because you want to level up your career, here are 6 tips to help you thrive:

Hot Tip #1: Wear something you feel comfortable and confident in. The last thing you want is to fidget with your outfit. You’re already stepping out of your comfort zone - don’t make it harder by wearing something you hate.

Hot Tip #2: Add a statement piece - like a fun necklace, hairband, watch, or something with a cool pattern. It can be a great conversation starter. And don’t forget, complimenting someone else’s unique piece can break the ice too.

Hot Tip #3: Speaking of conversation starters - here are some to help you get started and/or keep the conversation going and flowing:

  • How did you hear about this event?

  • Are you familiar with any other attendees here?

  • Have you been to this venue before?

  • What company do you work for?

  • What industry are you in?

  • How did you get into your line of work?

    • Do you love it? What do you enjoy the most about it?

  • What are your professional goals for the next few years?

  • How do you think recent changes will impact our field?

  • What are your thoughts on [relevant industry topic]?

    • Looking for a relevant topic? AI is booming in almost every industry right now.

Hot Tip #4: Follow up! But let’s go over the reasons why this is important:

  • That’s what networking is all about 😉

  • You can keep the conversation going and build a deeper connection.

  • You’d be surprised at how small the world really is. Following up will help you remember the people you’ve met at previous events - you never know when you will run into them again.

  • You also don’t know who they can connect you to. When you follow up, you have a higher chance of connecting with others in their network and at future events.

Hot Tip #5: Respect everyone and practice good etiquette. Treat all attendees with respect, regardless of their position or influence. Mind your manners, be polite, and avoid controversial topics that could alienate others.

Hot Tip #6: Not a drinker? Maybe that’s why you’re nervous to go to these events?! I totally understand! Something I’ve noticed about myself is I like to have something in my hand (NOT my phone), but I don’t drink at networking events, so what I will do is order a mocktail. If mocktails aren’t available, grab a water bottle or a soda (my go-to is a diet coke).

Important reminder: Networking is about building relationships, not just collecting contacts. Focus on making authentic connections rather than trying to meet as many people as possible.

An even more important reminder: Everyone else is nervous too. But you’re all there for the same reason so don’t be afraid to just fake it til you make it!
